Qualifications and Experience:
Background experience has included a very broad range of disciplines in General Medical Practice which were preceded by post graduate training in anaesthesia in the UK. In the early 1990s Dr Lovell developed an interest in Sports Medicine which ultimately lead to a more specific interest in Musculoskeletal Medicine. In the late 1990s he undertook a Post Graduate Diploma which was commenced in Physical Medicine at the University of Sydney, which ultimately lead to obtaining a Masters Degree in this area by the year 2000.
Initially, emphasis was on assessment and physical treatments of spinal related pain, but did include some aspects of sports injury and pain, particularly accumulated overuse pain problems. In 2002, Dr Lovell started sessional consulting with Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre. Subsequent to this there was an opportunity to join Metropolitan Spinal Clinic (as it was then known) in Prahran.
Since being a member of the team at Metro Spinal Clinic, further expertise and interests have developed in forms of chronic pain and more complex pain issues, particularly with a focus on spinal related pain. This includes training in interventional techniques, such as epidural injections and medial branch blocks. As part of this training, he has attended Workshops run by Professor Nikolai Bogduk in Newcastle, covering both lumbar and cervical spine. Dr Lovell is now undertaking regular medial branch blocks, sacroiliac joint injections and epidural injections at various levels.
Dr Lovell's background in assessment and treatment of myofascial pain complements the interventional techniques and offers greater scope to combine many aspects of treatment modalities to give a more comprehensive overall response to complex pain problems.
